Since a few months, when BOINC requests work for any of my projects (seti, climate and malaria) if only requests 1 second of new work. In the pasdt, it was requesting a few 100,000 seconds. What has happened?
It really depends on lots of factors - how many projects you have, their deadlines, how much work currently on the box, how many processors the box has and are allowed to do work, if projects have work to give out, etc.
Generally, the 1 second requests are done at:
-When you first attach to a project.
-When you have more than one processor and it needs to fetch work to make the second processor busy.
It depends on the version of BOINC that your running as well. The work fetch and cpu scheduler are almost always changing from time to time.
Depending on what the box is currently doing, this could be "normal".

This problem has been solved by installing the latest version of BOINC. All of a sudden, tons of work were downloaded. So, my computers are very busy again.
